Background

The Michael Leslie Pilbara Performing Arts Program was launched in 2006 after founding director Michael Leslie approached Rio Tinto with an idea to form a partnership program targeting young people in the Pilbara.

Given the company’s strong presence in the region, and Rio Tinto’s desire to build the capacity of its local communities and Indigenous population, the company was all ears.

Throughout this exciting partnership Michael’s persistence, passion and raw energy to make a difference in the lives of young people in the remote north-west region of Western Australia has bee undeniable.

His Program aims to provide opportunities for them to discover their hidden talents and overcome universal challenges such low self esteem, shame, shyness and embarrassment, poor body image, and a constant worry about what other people think of them.

Rio Tinto is proud to have begun the journey with Michael to help enrich the lives and opportunities for young people in the Pilbara. We invite other organisations to join Michael’s quest as a sponsor or working partner, knowing that you will be reaching into the hearts and minds of many through the gift of the Arts.
